Never Drink and Drive: NOT A DROP!

Greater Manchester Police, Drive Safe, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and all Local Authorities are supporting the Department for Transport's national campaign, which is particularly targeting Christmas partygoers and warning people to think before they drive the morning after a big night out.

Chief Inspector Mark Dexter from GMP's Roads Policing Unit said:

" The key message of this Christmas Drink Drive campaign is to be responsible and don't drink or take drugs before driving. Ensure someone in your group remains sober and acts as designated driver or take public transport - that way everyone is sure to get home safely. The only true safe drink drive limit is to drink no alcohol at all.
Christmas is a time for family and friends and no police officer wants to have to knock on someone's door and deliver the message that a loved one has died or been seriously injured at the hands of a drink or drug driver"

Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, Councillor David Acton, said:

"In 2010, 62 people were killed or seriously injured on the roads of Greater Manchester by people drink-driving. As well as the loss and damage to these lives, the lives of families and friends are often shattered - could you live with the consequences of drink driving?

There is also a serious impact on our services, with many occasions the assistance of our firefighters required at road traffic collisions. Our message to motorists is clear and uncompromising - never drink and drive, not even a drop. Do not become one of the statistics this Christmas."

If you see someone drink driving this Christmas please call Greater Manchester Police on the new non-emergency number 101, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Drinking and driving wrecks lives - don't make it yours!

Avoid becoming one of the statistics by following a few simple rules:

  • Make plans for getting home safely BEFORE you go out drinking - book a taxi, or organise a lift or a nominated driver - someone who will NOT be drinking.
  • Never get behind the wheel if you have been drinking - it's impossible to calculate whether you are safe to drive - the only safe limit is:
    NOT A DROP
  • Never get in a vehicle if you think the driver has been drinking.
  • If you have been drinking the night before, you may still be over the limit and unfit to drive the morning after. Use public transport and refrain from driving until later that day or the day after.

Watch the consequences for one lady of driving the morning after a few drinks.
